If you need an app on both iPhone and Android but don’t have the budget or time to build two separate native apps, you’ve probably come across React Native. It’s one of the most common ways businesses get a mobile app to market without doubling their development cost. But deciding whether it’s right for your project means understanding what it actually does well, and where it falls short.

What React Native actually is

React Native is a framework that lets developers write one codebase in JavaScript and have it run as a genuinely native app on both iOS and Android. This is different from a mobile website wrapped in an app shell — React Native apps use real native components, so they look and feel like apps built specifically for each platform, not a browser pretending to be one.

The appeal is straightforward: instead of paying for an iOS team and an Android team to build and maintain two versions of the same app, one team can build a single codebase that serves both. For a lot of businesses, particularly those launching a new product or testing an idea, that’s a meaningful saving in both time and ongoing maintenance.

Where cross-platform makes sense

React Native tends to be a strong fit when:

  • Your app needs to reach both iPhone and Android users from day one, and you don’t have separate budgets for each platform.
  • The app is largely built around forms, content, notifications, bookings, or data display rather than heavy device-specific processing.
  • You expect to iterate quickly after launch and want one codebase to update rather than two.
  • You’re validating a new product and need to get something usable in front of customers without committing to the cost of fully native development.

This covers a large share of business apps — booking systems, customer portals, loyalty apps, internal staff tools, and marketplace apps all fit comfortably within what React Native handles well.

Where it’s not the right tool

Cross-platform frameworks aren’t the answer for everything, and it’s worth being upfront about that rather than pretending React Native suits every project.

Apps that lean heavily on complex animations, augmented reality, advanced camera or sensor work, or anything pushing the hardware hard (think high-end gaming or specialised industrial device integrations) usually get better performance and reliability from fully native development.
